The Name of the Village:

  • it was called Spitali because of its small houses
  • it was called Spitali because of the many ancient tombs of Roman times
  • it was named Spitali because it belonged to the Ioannites Knights called Cypriots Spitaliotes

Asbestos Mine

In the past, the village used to have an important underground railway substation that started from Amiantos and ended up on the shore, making a total route of about 35 km. The wagons were filled with asbestos sacks that were mined at the Troodos mines and were headed to the shore to be subsequently exported to other countries. The mines ceased to operate in 1988, as did the station at Spitali.
